First-Year Initiative

A Unique Opportunity for First-Year Students!

The Rockefeller Center has launched a First-Year Initiative to provide students with opportunities to meaningfully engage in public policy early in their Dartmouth careers. Here's how to participate:

  1. Enroll in Public Policy 5: Introduction to Public Policy during the winter term...

  2. Take a course in statistical methods (e.g. ECON 10, SOCY 10, MSS 10, GOVT 10) during the fall, winter or spring terms of your first year...

  3. Apply to be a First-Year Fellow during the spring...

  4. Receive a special First-Year Civic Skills Training after spring term...

  5. Intern in Washington, DC, during the summer after your first year in a congressional office, policy think tank, executive branch agency, or advocacy organization with a grant from the Rockefeller Center with Dartmouth Alumni serving as mentors.

Up to twelve students who have successfully completed the introductory public policy and research method courses will be selected as First-Year Fellows. These students will be paired with policy internships in Washington, DC, and provided with the First-Year Civic Skills Training. This intensive, expense-paid, five days in Washington, DC, is an important advantage for these students, providing them with training in public speaking, networking, writing press releases, op-eds, and policy briefs, networking, and project management. Panels with Dartmouth Alumni are also arranged to provide students with exposure to career paths following Dartmouth, as well as how to get the most out of their time on campus. The Rockefeller Center will additionally fund these students so that they can work full-time at their internships.

First-Year Fellows will be placed in internships with Dartmouth Alumni serving in policy positions, where the supervisor is willing to take on a significant mentor role. A critical component of the Civic Skills Training is that students are trained in project management and asked to identify a project to complete during their internship. They will work with their internship supervisors to find a project that is tangible and substantive, realistic to accomplish in the time they will spend at the organization, and that meets a specific need of the organization. The Rockefeller Center will provide ongoing support to students, assisting them in identifying on-campus resources relevant to the projects they have identified and convening a mid-summer gathering of all First-Year Fellows in Washington, DC.
