AGORA: The Marketplace of Ideas

What is AGORA?

Named for the ancient Greek marketplace where social policy was debated and political discussions took place, AGORA is the Rockefeller Center's informal Friday evening dinner discussion for Dartmouth students.

Each Friday a diverse group of students converge on Rocky to eat food from favorite Hanover takeout spots and join the student-facilitated discussion. AGORA provides a relaxed forum that invites students to engage their peers in conversation and challenges them to listen, learn, and express their opinions.

What topics are discussed?

AGORA discussions include a wide range of issues: public policy, social justice, academia, health, law, and the environment – just to name a few. Topics are selected with student interests in mind, and run the gamut from local Dartmouth issues to those on the national and international stage.

This year's dinner-discussion topics have included:

  • Facebook Stalking
  • Marijuana
  • College Discipline
  • Grading at Dartmouth
  • Mental Health at Dartmouth
  • Dinner with Frank Schaeffer and discussion on the merits of changing the military structure and mandatory service
  • Corporate Recruiting

Who can participate?

Everyone. AGORA is open to all Dartmouth students. Newcomers to the discussions are always encouraged to drop in, have dinner, and share their views.

AGORA Leaders: Jake Baron '10 (fall term), Jennifer Murray '09 (fall, winter, and spring terms), Bret Vallacher '10 (winter term), and Courtney Merrill '09 (spring term).
