This winter the students in Gender and Policy Leadership had the opportunity to take their learning outside of the classroom with an experiential learning trip to Louisiana with Professor Anna Mahoney.

After the students of Public Policy 85: Global Policy Leadership completed ten weeks of study at Dartmouth and two weeks of field study in South Africa in fall of 2022, they completed a policy brief.

Today our group met with education activist Kate Houston and former director of South Africa's Public Prosecuting Office Bulelani Ngucka. Otherwise, time was dedicated to memo writing and soaking in our last full day together.

A busy day filled with new sights, new animals, and new treasures.

We embarked on a tour of Robben Island, the prison in which Nelson Mandela spent 18 years. After a rough boat ride back to Cape Town, we enjoyed lunch and spent the rest of the day working on our memo.

Under the shadow of Table Mountain, PBPL 85 sought to understand how official reconciliation – and the ANC's moral compass – went wrong.

After a restful night in Pretoria working on the memo, PBPL85 visited the U.S. embassy and said goodbye to Johannesburg. Up next is our final destination: Cape Town.

Concluding our time in Johannesburg, the group set out to South Africa's executive capital, Pretoria. In our first of two days in Pretoria, the group met with Roelf Meyer and others, as well as the Department of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation.
