Jeffrey S. Kelley '69

Jeff Kelley ’69 spent his career in communications and public affairs in government and the private sector in the U.S. and abroad. He served most recently in the Obama Administration as Director of Public Affairs for the Administration for Children and Families (ACF). ACF houses programs such as Head Start, child welfare and foster care, refugee resettlement, and the nation’s family assistance program (TANF).

Earlier, he owned Peer Communications LLC, where he organized conferences for the senior public affairs officers of more than 100 Fortune 500 companies. Mr. Kelley worked for more than 20 years for the DuPont Company, first as executive speechwriter for the Chairman, then in a series of management roles including more than a decade leading the company’s public and government affairs in Europe, based in Geneva, Switzerland.

After graduating from Dartmouth in 1969, Mr. Kelley earned a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. He served as Press Secretary to U. S. Senator Thomas J. McIntyre (D-NH) and as special assistant to Health and Human Services Secretary Patricia Roberts Harris in the Carter Administration. He was also a development officer at Dartmouth for the Tucker Foundation and the Medical School.

Married to Ellen Adams Kelley, he has two grown children and a grandson and resides in Washington, DC. He plays an active volunteer role in several organizations.
