This is an unpaid internship opportunity from outside the Rockefeller Center.

Brief Description of the organization:

At the U.S. Department of state, you can see diplomacy in action and there is a diverse range of careers and responsibilities found in the Foreign Service and Civil Service. It is the lead U.S. foreign affairs agency responsible for advancing freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community. The Department's employees, Foreign Service Officers and Specialists, Civil Service professionals and Foreign Service Nationals work at more than 270 embassies, consulates, and missions. Together, they help to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and prosperous world composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and act responsibly within the international system.

Brief Description of the Intern's role or key qualifications:

As an intern here or abroad, you will have the opportunity to work in U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the world, as well as in various bureaus located in Washington, D.C. and at Department offices around the United States. This program is designed to provide substantive learning experiences in a foreign affairs environment. Former Department of State Student Interns have written reports on human rights issues, participated in trade negotiations, assisted with U.S. citizens services or visa work, helped Americans in distress abroad, supported and helped to coordinate international conferences and visits of high-level officials, researched economic or environmental issues, monitored and evaluated media reporting, supported educational and cultural exchange activities and identified U.S. experts to speak overseas, and worked on web pages and electronic journals.

Qualification Requirements:

• U.S. citizenship
• GPA 2.5 or higher
• Have good academic standing
• Successfully complete a background investigation
• Be able to receive either a Secret or Top Secret clearance.
• You may be subject to random drug testing.

Furthermore, you must be:

• A student. This means you have been accepted for enrollment, or are enrolled as a degree-seeking student in an accredited college or university
• A full- or part-time continuing college or university junior, or graduate student (including graduating seniors intending to go on to graduate school). An applicant is considered a junior if he/she will have completed all sophomore credits (60 or more hours or 90 quarter hours) by the time the internships begins and will be entering at least the junior year immediately upon completion of the internship.
