Summer internships typically start in June and conclude in August/September. Both part and full-time positions are available.

Desired Class Year: While graduate students are preferred, applicants that meet the following criteria will also be considered:

• Undergraduate students who have completed at least two years of study by the start of the internship, and have relevant education and work experience in a related field.
• Recent undergraduates who have completed an undergraduate degree within 6 months of the internship start date.

Brief Description of the organization:

The National Council for Behavioral Health is the unifying voice of America's health care organizations that deliver mental health and addictions treatment and services. Together with our 3,000 member organizations serving over 10 million adults, children and families living with mental illnesses and addictions, the National Council is committed to all Americans having access to comprehensive, high-quality care that affords every opportunity for recovery. The National Council introduced Mental Health First Aid USA and more than 1.5 million Americans have been trained.

Brief Description of the Intern's role or key qualifications:

Over the past decade, the National Council for Behavioral Health has provided valuable real-world experience in the field of behavioral health care policy and practice. Interns from across the country have been able to leverage their interests and expertise to engage in substantive learning opportunities by supporting and working on various National Council initiatives. Examples of intern projects and responsibilities may include:

• Development of marketing plan for member engagement in practice improvement initiatives
• Execution of legislative fact sheets to distribute to members of Congress
• Research and analysis of evidence-based practices and policy landscape to inform proposal/grant development
• Literature reviews on evidence-based practices in behavioral health such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
• Development of social media and marketing plans
• Participation in meetings on Capitol Hill with members of key Senate and House committees
• Attendance at briefings and coalition meetings with national partners on behalf of the National Council

In order to be eligible to apply, applicants must demonstrate strong analytical, writing, and research skills. Interested individuals must have basic knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

• Mental illnesses and addictions
• Healthcare reform
• Public policy
• Integrated primary care and behavioral health service delivery
