Panel and BBQ on June 29: How Does National Health Policy Affect Local Hospitals?

*** PROGRAM UPDATE:  A couple of updates to today's event - due to the threat of rain, the event will be held in the rain location -- Hinman Forum (atrium area) of the Rockefeller Center.  Also, Ms. Formella will not be able to join us for the event. The 2010-2011 First-Year Fellows and the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy at Dartmouth are pleased to present the following panel and BBQ to kick off summer programming.  We hope that you can join us!

With the recent passage and subsequent debates of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and rising concerns over Medicare and Medicaid, national policy has an increasingly significant impact on how local hospitals administer care and how states must coordinate costs and policies. What happens to administrative costs with current mandates? What is good about the recent health care insurance reform and what still needs to be done? What is the role of states and what should it be? How are municipalities and communities of real people affected by these policies?

The panel of Upper Valley experts will discuss the implications of national health care policies on states, hospitals, and communities. Co-President of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital Nancy Formella, President of Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Michael Harris '72, and New Hampshire State Senator Matthew Houde '91 will answer questions after their remarks on the panel.

The Panel:
Nancy Formella, MSN, RN: Nancy Formella currently serves as a co-president of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She received her BSN from the University of Iowa and a MSN from Marquette University, and has taken additional graduate-level courses at Marquette University and the University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to New Hampshire, she worked in various capacities in the Mayo Health System in Minnesota. Nancy Formella joined DHMC in 1999 and was appointed president of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in 2007 and has received several awards for nursing leadership and administration. 

Michael Harris, Ph.D: Michael Harris recently served as Dartmouth College's Director of the Teacher Education and will be serving as the superintendent in Lyme. He is a Dartmouth '72 with a Ph.D. in education from University of New Hampshire. Not only has he served as a special education teacher and superintendent of Lebanon schools, but also serves as president for the board of trustees for Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Matthew Houde, NH State Senator: Matthew Houde graduated from Hanover High School and Dartmouth College (Class of 1991). Since graduating from the University of Connecticut Law School, he has practiced law in both Connecticut and New Hampshire. He currently serves as Associate Director of Career Services at Vermont Law School and has served as a member of the Board of the Centering Healthcare Institute. He is the District 5 representative and Democratic whip in the New Hampshire state senate.

Tina Naimie is the Vice President of Corporate Finance for Dartmouth-Hitchcock.  She started at D-H in February of 2011.  Prior to coming to D-H, Tina was the Chief Financial Officer at New London Hospital, New London, New Hampshire from 1995 to 2011.  At New London, Tina was responsible for finance, information systems, materials management, revenue cycle (billing, collection, registration, coding & transcription), decision support, risk management and corporate compliance.  Tina previously worked for Ernst & Young as a CPA in its Orlando, Florida and Manchester, New Hampshire offices providing audit and consulting services to healthcare and not for profit clients.  She is currently the chair of the board for Turning Points Network in Sullivan County.  She is a past president and Fellow of the New Hampshire/Vermont Healthcare Financial Management Association.   Tina received a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Master’s degree in accounting from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida.   She currently resides in Bow, New Hampshire with her husband and two children.
