Dr. Ira Helfand graduated from Harvard College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital and the Montefiore Hospital Medical Center. Before practicing at the Family Care Medical Center (Springfield, MA), Dr. Helfand worked in the ER at Mercy Hospital and for many years at Cooley Dickinson Hospital where he was Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and President of the Medical Staff. He is a co-Founder and past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and serves as co-President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace.
