Sarah Weddington: "Some Leaders are Born Women!", at Rocky 003 at 4:30 pm on May 2, 2013

In America today, women fill many of the highest posts in both government and business. The successes of these women, from Hillary Clinton to Condoleezza Rice, are shattering the out-of-date stereotyped gender roles that held back female progress in the past. Yet even in today’s progressive society, women still face gender biases and discrimination in their pursuit of success and leadership roles.

Sarah Weddington, a nationally renowned lawyer, professor, and women’s rights advocate is a perfect example of a successful woman in many positions of leadership. Her lecture, “Some Leaders are Born Women!” will address these gender norms, and how if a person possesses the skills and attributes of a leader, then gender should not even be a factor for consideration.
Sarah Weddington is a proven leader in government at the national and state levels, serving as general counsel of the US Department of Agriculture, the first ever woman director of the Texas Office of State-Federal Relations, and a three-term member of the Texas House of Representatives. Her first book, A Question of Choice, detailed the landmark Roe v. Wade case, where Dr. Weddington successfully argued before the Supreme Court. As a founding member of the Foundation for Women’s Resources, she has been instrumental in activities including “Leadership America,” Leadership Texas,” and the creation of The Women’s Museum in Dallas, TX. Dr. Weddington’s distinguished list of accolades include being named the “Face of the Century” by the San Antonio Express News, receiving the Margaret Brent Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Bar Association, the Speaking Out for Justice Award by the American Association of University Women, and “one of the Most Influential Lawyers of the 20th century” by Texas Lawyers. Dr.Weddington received her JD from the University of Texas Law School and is a Distinguished Alumna of McMurry University.
