Class of 2020 First-Year Fellow: Alexandrea Keith ‘20

Alexandrea Keith ’20 comes from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Julia R. Masterman High School as an AP Scholar with Distinction. At Masterman, Alexandrea served as the Co-President of the National Spanish Honor Society and worked as a tutor helping local middle school students. She was also a dedicated member of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) Teen Program.

At Dartmouth, Alexandrea plans to major in History. She is involved with Link Up, and America Reads, which reflects her commitment to education and female empowerment.

As a First-Year Fellow, Alexandrea interned at the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) under the mentorship of Tiernan Sittenfeld ’96 & Mark Sheridan ’15. LCV is a political organization that works to educate the public on the importance of environmental protection. As a policy and lobbying intern, Alexandrea worked with LCV’s governmental affairs team. While Congress was in session, she attended hearings, meetings and briefings that focused mainly on legislation relating to environmental issues and the budget for these programs. Furthermore, Alexandrea lobbied congressional offices, attended candidate meetings, testified at two EPA public hearings, and worked on a capstone project. For her capstone, she researched the Flint water crisis and compared this environmental justice issue to the state of water infrastructure across the nation. At the end of her internship, she presented her research to staff members and created a memo with policy recommendations for LCV and its state affiliates.

According to Alexandrea, “The most rewarding part of the fellowship experience was testifying at the EPA twice. I had the opportunity to write and deliver testimony in front of the EPA administration about their proposed delay of compliance deadlines for the Steam Electric Effluent Limitations and Guidelines and the EPA’s proposed delay of its June 2016 new source performance standards for methane from the oil and gas industry. While I disagreed with the EPA’s proposed delays, it was a great experience to be able to voice my opposition as both a citizen and a member of LCV.”

After graduation, Alexandrea plans to pursue a career in education.
