On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, Dick '64 and Barbara Couch, leaders of the Couch Family Foundation and the Hypertherm Hope Foundation, visited PBPL 51: Leadership in Civil Society: Philanthropy in the Nonprofit Sector, taught by Professor Ron Shaiko. This term, the course focuses on philanthropic efforts in the Upper Valley region surrounding Dartmouth. Dick and Barbara have demonstrated their philanthropy through their family foundation as well as their corporate foundation.

Hypertherm is the largest private employer in the Upper Valley, with more than 1,000 employees in the region and another 800 employees worldwide. In addition to their funding of organizations and programs throughout the region, Dick and Barbara, are significant contributors to the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center and to Dartmouth.

They discussed their philosophy of giving and the decision-making methodologies employed by each of their foundations. Their comments were quite relevant to the students as the class is in the process of soliciting proposals and evaluating the proposals for funding by the end of the term.

The class has received a grant of $40,000 from the Philanthropy Lab, a program of the Once Upon A Time Foundation, to provide programmatic grants to Upper Valley nonprofit organizations. The students will announce their decisions at an awards ceremony on Thursday, May 23 at the Rockefeller Center.
