The Brookings Institution is a leading think tank on various areas of national public policy. Brookings traces its foundation back to 1916, when a group of experts founded the Institute for Government Research, the first private organization devoted to analyzing public policy issues at the national level. Overview:

This academic credit/external sponsorship internship, beginning in June 2018, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in public policy and political science to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.

This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student's field of study or career interest.  It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.

Responsibilities:

Students will have an opportunity learn a variety of research skills such as data collection, editing and general research support. The topic areas include, but are not limited to: collecting, fact-checking, and helping to maintain Vital Statistics on Congress; Congress and congressional procedure; political polarization; congressional gridlock; reforming government; taxation, including citizen attitudes about taxation, social welfare impacts of tax policy; voter registration, including the registration of underrepresented groups; survey methodology, data management and processing techniques, data science principles

In addition to providing support to the scholars directly, interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.

Qualifications:

Education/Knowledge/Skills

Graduate or undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in public policy or political science are encouraged to apply.  Our most successful interns have: a demonstrated interest in American politics and policy; congress and congressional reform; and/or electoral politics; strong writing, analytic and internet-based research skills; experience with fact-checking, summarizing new information, creating literature reviews; and familiarity with data collection, data management, and tools including Excel, Stata, R, and/or Python

Additional Information:

Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
