On January 20, 2022, Fellow Chris Jun '22 presented on self-confidence and its role in achieving effective leadership. To contextualize the importance of self-confidence in leadership, Chris shared a personal story outlining his experiences as a teenager working for a manager that lacked self-confidence; he described his work environment as one of low morale, high turnover among staff, and uncertainty in expectations.
[more]On January 14th, Awo Ado gave a presentation on the importance of names. Awo opened by discussing how names hold far more significance than just words that are attached to individuals, and that, particularly for those individuals who have experienced verbal butchering of their names, disrespect towards their names, and othering of their names, the significance of names goes far beyond simply being "what you are called".
[more]On January 20th, Claire Deng gave a presentation on "The Courage to Follow". Claire argues that following and leading are not mutually exclusive, and that followership is in fact an underrated aspect of leadership. She references Derek Sivers and his First Follower Theory, which highlights the critical importance of the first follower in the start of any movement. This follower is the one who makes the leader into a leader, and it is this person who every subsequent follower is imitating.
