For their fourth virtual session of the Rockefeller Leadership Fellowship program, the Fellows were joined by Dr. Lowell “Chris” Matthews, an associate professor and the director of the Honors Program at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Chris’s goal for the session was to breakdown the definitions of the vague but ubiquitous terms equality and equity.

On our October 22nd session, Tola Akinwumi gave her presentation on why community building should be at the forefront of our leadership philosophies. Citing a TedTalk, she defined community as a group of people with shared interests and goals building “common unity” between minds, spirit, citizenship, and people.

This past summer, I interned at The New Hampshire Adult Parole Board, which is an agency that presides over parole hearings. My task was to research the parole practices in other states and record them down. Over my internship, I combed through hundreds of state statues and parole handbooks to understand how parole is issued, broadly speaking, in the United States. Each state has different guidelines and requirements handed down from their respective legislature.

This past summer, I interned at A Step Ahead Foundation which is a Memphis based nonprofit dedicated to helping women gain access to reliable birth control. Through working on public policy, the foundation hopes to provide long acting, reversible contraception to all Tennessee women. Many areas in Memphis and across the state of Tennessee are severely impoverished. Women too often have an unplanned pregnancy at an early age. Foundation education and funding enables women of all backgrounds to avoid these pregnancies.
