Bass comes from a lineage of public service: his father, Robert P. Bass, was a New Hampshire governor, and his grandfather, also named Perkins Bass, was Abraham Lincoln’s campaign manager for Illinois and later U.S. Attorney. His son, Charlie Bass '74, also served in the House of Representatives.

Throughout his career in public service, Brown was a tireless campaigner, a dedicated public servant, and a bit of a trailblazer as a liberal Democrat in the state of New Hampshire during the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. “A notable public servant, he was respected [and] admired by men of both parties and leaves behind him a record that very few New Hampshire citizens will ever attain.” Carroll County Independent, 1955.

Dooley was a member of the DKE fraternity, Casque and Gauntlet, Arts, Pleides, and Green Key organizations. His frequent involvement in school organizations and institutions would eventually be a precursor to his life in public service.
