On January 25, 2011 the Rockefeller Center’s very own Assistant Director of Co-Curricular Programs, Danielle Thompson '97 presented two sessions on social media to the MLDP group. For the first hour session, Ms. Thompson instructed participants in the finer points of blogging. She began by discussing her own experience with her personal blog, which she began in March 2008. This self-directed social media project allowed her to gain valuable experience that she was then able to add to her professional skill set. Ms. Thompson invited participants to take out their laptops and start their own blogs. She demonstrated how to create blog posts, showing students blogging skills such as video embedding. She also explained the merits of blogging as a form of personal branding.
Ms. Thompson then introduced the topic of the use of social media in finding an internship or job in the second hour session. She reviewed the use of LinkedIn and Twitter in finding opportunities, and offered suggestions of other helpful job and internship databases, like experience.com (founded by Jenny Floren '93, a member of the Rockefeller Center Board of Visitors). Participants walked away with a new found understanding of the power of social media. Social media isn’t just about socializing; it is an influential informational, networking, and promotional tool.
