Dr. Clayborne Carson discusses Martin Luther King, Jr.'s global vision to address racial injustice, poverty, and war. Dr. Carson will consider how that vision and King's unanswered question can help us process current events and find ways to take action.

Speaker Bio:
Clayborne Carson
has devoted most of his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the movements King inspired. Since receiving his doctorate from UCLA in 1975, Dr. Carson has taught at Stanford University, where he is now Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor of History, Ronnie Lott Founding Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute, and a Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.

In 1985 the late Coretta Scott King invited Dr. Carson to direct a long-term project to edit and publish an authoritative edition of King's speeches, sermons, correspondence, publications, and unpublished writings. Under Carson’s direction, the King Papers Project has produced seven volumes of The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2005 Carson founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute to endow and expand the work of the King Papers Project.

Since retiring from classroom teaching, Carson now teaches a free online open enrollment course, American Prophet: The Inner Life and Global Vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. and produces a podcast, The World House. He has received four honorary degrees, including one from Morehouse College, the alma mater of Martin King, Jr. and Senior.

Cheryl Bascomb ’82
joined the Dartmouth Advancement team as vice president for alumni relations in June 2018 and brings more than 30 years of private sector marketing expertise to the role. As vice president for alumni relations, she provides strategic vision and leadership for alumni communications and engagement and supports volunteers in service to the College for over 84,000 alumni worldwide.

A longtime Dartmouth volunteer at regional and national levels, Cheryl has served as vice president of the Association of Alumni, president of the Dartmouth Club of Maine, alumni councilor, alumni admissions interviewer, and Dartmouth College Fund volunteer.

Cheryl received an AB in psychology from Dartmouth College. As an undergraduate, she played women’s rugby, captained the track and cross-country teams, and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and was the Agnes Kurtz Award Winner her senior year. She and her husband, Dave Van Wie ’79, live in Lyme, NH.
