In 1845 President James Polk nominated, and the Senate subsequently confirmed, Senator Woodbury to the Supreme Court of the United States. Woodbury would serve until his death, just six years later at the age of 61.

Throughout his public service, Dartmouth remained a central part of Moses's life. He would return often to campus to give lectures ranging from deforestation to the legislative functions of the senate.

Stevens credited education as his own means for escaping poverty and felt every child deserved a similar chance. He saw education as the greatest path to equality and without it, Stevens believed the country would remain divided along racial and socioeconomic lines.

Bass comes from a lineage of public service: his father, Robert P. Bass, was a New Hampshire governor, and his grandfather, also named Perkins Bass, was Abraham Lincoln’s campaign manager for Illinois and later U.S. Attorney. His son, Charlie Bass '74, also served in the House of Representatives.
